LapViz devices

LapViz devices, a lap timer built on M5Stack

The LapViz firmware turns small M5Stack boards into lap timers for karts, cars and bikes. They time every lap to the millisecond and broadcast it over Bluetooth, without pairing, to the LapViz apps and the live timing.

Two ways to time

Use the magnetic stripes of the track, or the GPS where there are none.

  • Magnet sensor: counts the stripes of the track, 1 to 10 per lap
  • GPS 10 Hz: crossings interpolated to the millisecond, a few hundredths of accuracy
  • Circuit found automatically among the circuits of LapViz, or drawn on a satellite map

On the device

A screen sized for a glance at speed.

  • Big lap time, big timer and predictive delta against the best lap
  • Splits, sectors and the ideal lap
  • Session statistics and lap chart

Shared over Bluetooth

Every lap and sector is broadcast in Bluetooth advertisements: any number of phones receive it, without pairing.

  • Received by LapViz Stopwatch and shown in the live timing with the name of the kart
  • Also an external GPS for RaceChrono
  • LED matrix board showing the position, the last and the best lap of every kart

Supported boards

Off-the-shelf M5Stack hardware, set up from the browser with Chrome or Edge.

  • M5StickS3, AtomS3 and AtomS3R, Atom Lite and Atom Matrix: magnet or GPS
  • M5Stack Core, Fire and Core2: magnet; CoreS3: magnet or GPS
  • Settings, circuits and pairing from setup.lapviz.com (Web Bluetooth)

Frequently asked questions

Which hardware do I need?

An M5Stack board (M5StickS3, AtomS3, Core2, CoreS3...) and, for the timing, a magnet sensor on the Grove port or an M5Stack GPS unit.

How precise is the timing?

With the magnets, the time of each passage is exact to the millisecond. With the 10 Hz GPS, the crossing of the line is interpolated, for an accuracy of a few hundredths of a second.

How do I configure the device?

Open setup.lapviz.com in Chrome or Edge, hold the button of the device for 3 seconds and enter the code it shows: settings and circuits are sent over Bluetooth.
