Software comparison

Karting and track day data analysis software compared

Which software to analyse your laps? The one of your logger, an app on your phone or a tool for every brand: here is what each one does, from the public information of each product. Karting first, but it works the same for cars and motorbikes.

The software of your logger

Made by the maker of the logger, for its own loggers.

  • The only one that configures the logger, its sensors and its displays
  • Usually free with the logger, often for Windows only
  • Race Studio 3 for AiM, VBOX Test Suite for Racelogic; Unipro, Alfano and Starlane have their own software too

The lap timer apps

RaceChrono, Harry's LapTimer, TrackAddict, the RaceBox app: the phone times your laps.

  • Timing on track, with the GPS of the phone or an external receiver
  • Analysis on the screen of the phone, exports for the computer
  • LapViz opens their VBO and GPX exports

LapViz: every brand in one place

A web site and apps, not tied to a logger.

  • The files of AiM, Unipro, Alfano, RaceBox, VBOX, GoPro and the exports of the apps
  • In the browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS, nothing to install
  • 3D replay on the satellite view, with a ghost and the sound of the engine
  • Leaderboards per circuit, teams and sessions shared with a link
  • Not in LapViz: the configuration of a logger, the frequency analysis (FFT) and the PDF reports

Frequently asked questions

What is the best karting data analysis software?

The one that reads your files on your computer. To configure an AiM logger, Race Studio 3 is needed; to analyse the files of any brand on any computer, LapViz Studio opens them in the browser, for free.

What is the best free telemetry analysis software for track days?

For the files of a lap timer or an app, LapViz Studio is free, runs in the browser and reads most brands. The software of your logger stays the one that configures it.

Is there an alternative to Race Studio for Mac?

Yes. Race Studio 3 runs on Windows; LapViz Studio opens the .xrk files of the AiM loggers in the browser of a Mac, for free and without installing anything. Downloading the logger still needs Race Studio 3.

Can I analyse the data of several brands in the same software?

Yes, in LapViz: the files of AiM, Unipro, Alfano, RaceBox, VBOX, GoPro and the exports of the phone apps open in the same Studio and can be overlaid.

Which phone app should I use as a lap timer?

They all time your laps: check that yours exports VBO or GPX to analyse your sessions on a computer. The free LapViz app sends your sessions to your account directly.

Do I need an account to try LapViz?

No. The Studio and the 3D replay work without an account. A free account keeps your sessions and puts your laps on the leaderboards of the circuits.
